October 12 , 2011 meeting minutes

Those present: Bill, Laurel, Pam, Sara, Jan

Discussion on the presenter application: to insert - Have you done this program at another library, and if so, who is the contact person? Also, highlight and/or bold print the date the contract needs to be returned. We need a pending file for contracts that have not been confirmed.

Bill will add Sara Fenton to the blog and he shared that everything is in place for the remaining 2011 programs, including knitting and American sign language classes. Also Ann Richard's Stress/Massage class, Raising Backyard Chickens on the 17th, Ins & Outs of Nook on the 18th, and Bee Keeping on the 26th. The Indy College Funding is good to go and will be marketed to high school sophomores and juniors.

Bill is checking with Beth Dickey regarding a Zambia program in late December. There was discussion for a very basic technology class which is a possibility if we can utilize a mobile computer lab. Presenterwould need to speak in simple, basic language so attendees would not be intimidated.

Bill announced that an adult service person would be available to meet and greet attendees until Sara's replacement is found. Laurel said that if necessary, a manager could be present.

A suggestion was made to request funds from the Library Guild for a possible Iditarod program.

Laurel suggestedwe not pass out surveys at every program. Perhaps we could put them on Survey Monkey.

We were encouraged that if we bring program ideas to the meetings that we need to also suggest a potential person who can present the program.

Next meeting: November 23 @2 pm.

August 31 Programming Team Minutes

August 31, 2011 program meeting minutes. Those present: Bill, Laurel, Pam Arlington, Sarah and (for half the meeting) JanDue to Diane's busy schedule, Laurel will be representing her on this team. Laurel shared that as this team continues to evolve, we need to be more proactive in seeking out presenters, rather than waiting for them to contact us. When business people generally contact us, their primary goal is to push their own agenda. Seeking out presenters will enable us to offer programs that our research (from books/subjects the patrons are requesting) indicates are of interest to patrons and that they would be more likely to attend. Sylvia can run reports to help us ascertain our patron's interests. To market our programs to the appropriate audience, we need to ask what sites would be favorable to place program information. i.e. For the recent program covering the subject of foreclosures, it would have been beneficial to advertise at local food pantries, WIC offices, sites that draw people who are experiencing hard times. Sarah shared contract agreement concerns. She would like for the contract to state that it must be signed and returned within ten days of the verbal agreement. The presenter must also understand that the contract is only an agreement for date and time and discourage any date changes. We can pay presenters for mileage which we can ask the Friends or Guild to reimburse.Bill inquired about a presentation application from Jim Weir. Laurel expressed that he shouldn't present a program because he is an insurance agent, not an attorney for the elder.Thank you to Sarah Mann for completing the notes when I(Jan) had to leave the meeting early. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 12 at 2:00. Bring ideas and contact information that would draw the interest of our patrons.

Finally, a check

After writing for seven years, completing three novels and finaling in three contests, I finally won a contest with the book I finaled with in Houston last year, Unopened Dreams. Monday I actually received a winners check for $50.00. Although I would be in the negative if I tried to determine an hourly amount for the countless I've been writing, the $50.00 felt great!

Program

This past Thursday night, we had a program "Alternatives to Foreclosure." Unfortunately, nobody showed, though two people had signed up. Are there any titles for such a program that attendees might not find invasive? Please share as you're able.
Thanks,
~Bill
P.S. We're hoping to bring the program back in the middle of the fall.

June minutes

Those in attendance on June 22, 2011: Bill Reed, Sarah Mann, Jennifer Worley, Tina Meeks, and Jan Aldridge.

Sarah gave each team member the program attendees replies from a survey requesting program feedback. 11 surverys were turned in. Sarah also made program display boards for the foyer as well as a flyer listing programs through December 2011. Sarah tries to line up presenters by October or November of the previous year.

We received several business cards from people who want to present programs next year.

Tina is contacing CILT - Central Indiana Land Trust - regarding a tree program next spring and hopes to discover a source for free tree seedlings.

We discussed the need for a printed guideline to give potential presenters. Afterthe team came up with guideline ideas, Bill condensed them into a rough draft which he sent to each department member to critique. Pass along any changes to Bill.

The next schedule meeting is Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:00.

Programming Workshop at Tippecanoe Public Library

On the ILF site, I saw that Tippecanoe Public Library is having a conference that includes a workshop entitled: Adult Programming Wanted: Dead or Alive
The detail reads: What drives adult programming? What are the success factors? Find out how a novice librarian came to plan and "execute" over 100 successful adult programs. Attendees will learn about each library's programming philosophy, Frankfort's highly successful brown-bag lunch series, and TCPL's strategies that have led to phenomenal program growth.
Presenters: Tom Smith and Kathleen Ukstins, Frankfort Community Public Library: Alison Moss and Mandie Roberts, Tippecanoe County Public Library.

The conference is Friday, May 13 and ILF member rates are $35.00, non-member $52.50.

This would be closer than the workshop in Kentucky, and therefore more likely to be approved.

possible roadtrip (-;

f-y-i, SWON - formerly the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, now known as SWON, (I forget what the acronym stands for) is presenting a Public Library Adult Program Planners Network on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 2:00 - 4:00 at Campbell County Public Library - Newport Branch. (just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati) It is FREE - light snacks will be provided. Their description of the meeting is as follows: Join other adult programmers for a discussion and sharing session. We will explore opportunities for libraries to collaborate across systems on programs, share programming ideas, discuss successes and difficulties, and share program planning tips. ...so please join our conversation. This may count toward employee CIU requirements. This program sounds more beneficial to me than any program I attended last autumn at ILF. Jan
